Call for contribution: Special session on SSF markets at the IIFET 2020 [CLOSED]

“Markets and market opportunities for small-scale fishery products"

SSF special session for
the International Institute of Fisheries Economics & Trade (IIFET)
20th biennial conference

29 June – 3 July 2020, Vigo, Spain

Session synopsis:

Fisheries, and mostly small-scale fisheries, make an important contribution to nutrition, food security, sustainable livelihoods and poverty alleviation. Local fresh fish obtained with sustainable gears frequently is not adequately differentiated from the catches of industrial fleets or from the fish coming refrigerated or frozen into the market. Several factors affect the capacity of small-scale fishers to sell their fish, receive fair prices, and to add value to their catches. For instance, existing national and regional regulations, and competition from large-scale, aquaculture and even recreational products, globalized marketing schemes and other trade barriers, may restrict market access.

This panel aims to examine and discuss the factors which affect fish products’ entering markets, specially products from small-scale fishery catch, explore new market opportunities and alternative marketing options.

Call for abstracts:

We are interested in the supply chain from catch to markets in general, and call for abstracts focused on the following topics:

  • Market interaction of local small-scale fishery catches with those from large scale fleets,
  • Impact of world markets on local fishing strategies,
  • “New” and existent strategies for adding-value to small-scale fishery catches (e.g. certification, eco-labelling, direct selling, alternative food networks), its shortcomings and new opportunities,
  • New/innovative market opportunities and alternative marketing options,
  • The role of middlemen in marketing,
  • The role of fisher organization in marketing of seafood products,
  • The role of women on markets, and
  • Consumption and consumer preferences/acceptability of market diversification/differentiation strategies.
