SSF Guidelines represent voyage of struggle, empathy and support

The World Fish Blog 'Fish Tank' published a news article focusing on some of the highlights from the 3rd World Small-Scale Fisheries Congress. The article emphasized the implementation of the 'Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication' (the SSF Guidelines) as a "hot topic" at the congress. John Kurien made important remarks about the participatory process that led to the endorsement of the SSF Guidelines by FAO in 2014. He stated that the document constitutes an ‘ideal example’ of participatory policymaking—a ‘people-public-private’ collaboration.

I recently attended the 3rd World Small-Scale Fisheries congress, a fantastic five day event uniting researchers, policymakers and representatives of global fishing communities.

The 3rd World Small-Scale Fisheries Congress was portrayed in the 'Women in Fisheries' website where Madeleine Gustavsson, one of the participants, stated that 'the conference presented an opportunity to learn more about women’s small-scale fisheries networks', through examples from across the globe presented as part of a special session on gender, as well as a fisher-to-fisher talk circle. The congress also formally launched the Special Issue '(En)Gendering Change in Small-scale Fisheries and Fishing Communities in a Globalized World', edited by Katia Frangoudes and Siri Gerrard, and presented the video about Fishing for Success that was one of the winners of the ‘Women in Seafood’ annual video competition for 2018, by Justin Oakey and Troy Maher.
