TBTI congratulates Dr. Berkes on being elected to the Royal Society of Canada (RSC), the country’s most esteemed association of scholars and scientists. Dr. Berkes was elected to the RSC along with 86 other Fellows on November 27th of 2015 in Victoria, British Columbia. Election to the academies of the Royal Society of Canada is the highest honour a scholar can achieve in the arts, humanities, and sciences.
Based in the University of Manitoba’s Department of Environment and Ecology, Dr. Berkes is an international leader in the areas of commons theory and the interrelations between societies and their resources. He has been researching conditions to prevent the occurrence of ‘the tragedy of the commons’. Throughout his career he has produced approximately 230 scholarly publications, including 10 books, and contributed to literature of linked social-ecological systems, resilience, and indigenous ecological knowledge.
