TBTI student Mirella de Oliveira Leis is in the final stages of completing her master’s thesis titled: Implementation of Marine Protected Areas as a governability challenge in Southern Brazil. Her research focused primarily on the Marine National Park in the Currais Islands and the fishing communities of Pontal do Paraná municipality of Southern Brazil. After returning home to complete the writing of her thesis, Mirella was  provided with the opportunity to attend the International Ocean Institute’s (IOI) 2016 Training Program in Halifax, NS, from May 18th to July 15th, 2016.

.

The IOI training program was funded by a CERC.OCEAN grant, through Dr. Doug Wallace and will take place over the course of two months including 200 hours in the classroom as well as lectures, coursework, discussion, field trips, and an international round-table. We are proud of all of Mirella’s accomplishments and wish her the best of luck over the next couple of months.
