TBTI at Science Rendezvous: ‘Full STEAM Ahead’ towards fisheries sustainability

On May 12th, TBTI participated at Science Rendezvous "Full STEAM Ahead!", a Canada-wide, free and all-ages event held at Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John's. The event that integrates arts and science took place in the lobbies of the Science, Chemistry/Physics, and Engineering buildings as well as the Bruneau Centre Atrium. Participants had a chance to see what scientists are up to at Memorial University, thus bringing academia and community closer.

"Science Rendezvous is an annual festival that takes science out of the lab and onto the street!"

TBTI at Science Rendezvous 2018

Participants who visited the TBTI booth had a chance to see the importance of sustainability in fisheries while taking part in fun and safe hands-on activities.

My First Fish Recipe

Kids colored and took home their first fish recipe using cod, herring, mackerel, capelin or lobster, inspired by TBTI Great Fish for a Change events. By doing so, they could acknowledge and recognize the importance of fish as food, and of small-scale fisheries for sustainable and viable coastal communities. They learned that by sharing fish recipes and enjoying the act of preparing and having a meal together we can appreciate the significance of fish in our daily lives and strengthen the connection between the ocean and us.

SustainThis!

Teenagers and adults played the conservation and sustainability knowledge game, where they were challenged to answer multiple-choice questions on Freshwater, Marine Water, Resource Extraction, Air and Atmosphere, Wetlands, Land Use, and Biodiversity.

Let's Go Fishing!

Kids had a chance to learn about fishing sustainability while competing for limited fisheries resources caught from a common pool. While fishing for their quota during the fishing season they had to successfully avoid other gears, a no-take marine protected area, endangered species, and juveniles. The winner of the game was the player who reached their quota while following the rules and contributing to fisheries sustainability.
